About WBGS Sixth Form

Watford Grammar School for Boys has an enviable reputation as one of the top-performing schools in the country. In particular, we are one of the top schools in the country at helping students into the 30 most competitive universities.

Our Sixth Form students work in a challenging intellectual environment and we offer a wide range of courses, with opportunities to engage in many extra-curricular activities. Examination results are outstanding.

The Sixth Form at Watford Grammar School for Boys (WBGS) is large by most standards, with around 200 students in each of the Lower and Upper Sixth. While the majority of our Sixth Form is made up of students who have been with us since Year 7, we also offer a number of places each year to external candidates who choose to come to us for their further education after GCSEs. We invite external applications after our annual Sixth Form Open Day in October.

Why choose Watford Grammar Boys’ School for Sixth Form?

Academic excellence

The school has a national reputation for academic excellence. Each year, 99% of those leaving the Upper Sixth go on to university, the substantial majority of whom achieve places at Russell Group universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. The school's reputation is founded on a long tradition of excellence, sustained by highly qualified and committed teaching staff as well as excellent facilities.

The Sixth Form at Watford Grammar School for Boys offers a wide choice of A Level subjects for study. The timetable is structured to give boys time for independent learning, in preparation for university-level study. It is not only academically rigorous, but socially cohesive and offers many opportunities for students to follow their interests.

A chance to explore your passions

The Sixth Form is a place for achieving your best in your chosen academic subjects, but also for developing your interests in a wide range of activities.

The school offers a wide range of activities beyond A Level study. It is particularly strong in sport, with full fixture lists against the strongest schools in the area, and a significant number of our students regularly appear for county, regional and even national teams. Debating, chess, drama and music are other areas in which the school enjoys a national reputation.

The school has close links with Watford Grammar School for Girls, and there are many opportunities for collaboration through drama, music, societies, trips abroad, joint Sixth Form activities and shared teaching for certain subjects.

Outstanding support and advice

The Sixth Form is divided into House forms. Each student is assigned a Form Tutor who takes a close interest in his academic and personal development and provides expert advice on higher education.

Our students are given support in making decisions about their next steps after school, and their eventual career choice, through a programme which includes a weekly Friday afternoon lecture and talks from prominent figures from all areas of business and public life. Our annual Careers Day for Lower Sixth students features around 40 mentors, many of which are successful Old Boys of the school, giving personalised careers advice based on their own experiences.

We also place an emphasis on encouraging our Sixth Formers to become mentors and supporters to those lower down in the school through the Prefect and House systems.  We have a tradition of Sixth Formers working with younger boys in team sports and societies, and in support roles in academic work through our morning workshop and lesson support schemes. There are opportunities to work with the community outside the school as well as within it.

Testimonials from students who joined WBGS in Year 12

“The transition from my old school was easy to make as everyone I met was friendly and welcoming, and all the staff were supporting and approachable. Being in the sixth form is a big step up from GCSEs. The extra free periods, and the group and private study areas in the sixth form centre are very useful for staying on top of your work. All the teachers are very friendly and have been a huge help. I’m really glad I made the move.”

Chukwuebuka, Year 12

“The transition from Year 11 to sixth form was immense. However, the school has done everything in its power to prepare us for the next two years. There is the perfect balance between freedom and guidance, and sixth formers have study areas in which they can revise and work, away from the commotion of the lower school.”

Ayo, Year 12

“Watford Boys is an excellent school with a plethora of academic and extra-curricular activities. The sixth form is extremely welcoming and everything you do directs you to having the best application for university, whilst also helping you develop social skills. The teachers and existing students have welcomed me with open arms so I feel just as much part of the school as those who have been here since Year 7.”

Khayyam, Year 12

“I am extremely pleased by the nurturing environment and modern facilities Watford Boys has provided since I transitioned from my previous school. The leaders provide immense assistance throughout the year, and I already feel supported in thinking about my options after leaving school.”

Daaniyal, Year 12
