On Thursday 21st November, 10 Watford Boys Sixth Formers made the short tube ride to participate in Northwood College’s Model COP, centred around the ongoing COP 29 summit in Baku. Alongside multiple other schools, students worked as part of delegations representing a variety of countries across the planet, from global superpowers like the US and China to the relative minnows of Azerbaijan and the Bahamas.

Although the boys knew which countries they would represent in advance, they were given just 5 minutes' notice over which topics would be discussed, and it required quick thinking and communication to establish, detail and communicate their positions. The vast majority of the day was spent in the hall, with all delegates together debating issues surrounding whether enough was being done to tackle Climate change and who should bear the cost of any further measures (a point of fierce contention between China and the US in particular).  Near the end, competitors  were sent into breakout rooms and had to negotiate final agreements similar to those traditionally reached at international summits like COP. Although the war some had hoped for was avoided, it was nevertheless a brilliant day of debate, discussion and diplomacy that left all involved satisfied!

Thanks to Ms Delahaye for accompanying the group and Sam S and Drew T as co-leaders of our MUN society here at Watford Boys.  It’s no surprise that this event was a resounding success and attracted interest from across the school. More Model United Nations competitions are to follow…..
