Politics Conference
BackOn the 2nd December twenty eager 6th formers and Mr Horner joined a thousand others at Westminster Methodist Hall to hear a post-mortem of the UK election results by politicians from across the political spectrum.
Amongst the many eminent political speakers, Mr Farage was undoubtedly a highlight for many. His opinions are doubtlessly divisive with the public, though certain sections of the room felt quite resolute in their utter hatred of Mr Farage calling him out as a fascist. However, one of his ideas did resonant with most, which is: a faith in the ability of people to respectfully engage in debate and the importance of our democracy. This was after all, what this event was about. It was an opportunity for those whom government policy will directly impact in a few short years, to engage and question those who will and have shaped our futures as young people, whilst conveniently tying in with our Politics A level curriculum.
Countless speakers including Siân Berry (current Green party MP) and Michael Gove (former Conservative party minister), Lindsey Hoyle (speaker of the house of commons) all gave their take on the state of their parties following the very recent General Election this July, as well as on the state of US politics and on the election of Donald Trump in the USA. Some (Michael Gove, even used this opportunity to do some advertisement for their current literary projects! This politics excursion will live on in the memories of all that attended and will unquestionably weave its way into many future personal statements.
