Sixth Form News October 2024
BackSixth Form Friday Lectures
This half term our sixth form students have heard talks from a variety of guest speakers for our Friday afternoon lecture programme. They have heard talks on philosophy, malaria and the creative industries respectively from University researchers, Hina Khalid from Cambridge and Joe Challenger from Imperial, plus Will Saunders, formerly at the BBC but now based at Royal Holloway. Author Laura Bates, has spoken on the Everyday Sexism project and Matt Springham Associate Professor at St Mary’s University. Research, Development and Innovation at Arsenal Football Club has talked on aligning personal and professional development.
School Fun Run
On a chilly but thankfully dry lunchtime, Tuesday 24th September, around 50 students and staff put on their running gear to complete our 3km fun run – 5 laps around the school field, cheered on by others on their lunch break and- raising money for Cancer Research (specifically the Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital). Led by Year 13 student and keen runner, Victor Culverwell, and our Head Boy team, the students have already raised an impressive amount of around £700 through voluntary donations and the JustGiving page https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/wbgscancerresearch-ccrh) – well above the target set of £250 and in their words “ so we can do our part for the community and ultimately help those families fighting the fight against cancer”.
Clubs & Societies Fair
Here at Watford Boys there are so many clubs and societies running at lunchtime or after school – chess, board games, psychology, reading club, music tech, drama, classics, debating, the list goes on….Early in the school year, our Head Boy team organised another highly successful event to gather students leaders from each of these in the STEM Centre one lunchtime, to promote and remind the rest of the student community about all of these amazing extra-curricular opportunities. Students not already going to these are encouraged to look at the list on our website and in the school library and hall and to pop along at lunchtime to try something new!!
