Welcome back to Hans Woyda everyone! We had a very tricky and tense first match against Watford Girls for Round 1 with some amazing comebacks and quick thinking. The lineup from today's away match goes as follows…

WBGS | Aaryan (Y13) | Rahul (Y12) | Ray (Y11) | Thomas (Y9) | Jakub (Spec) | Adam (Spec) | Mrs Groves (Staff)

WGGS | Ria (Y13) | Babita (Y12) | Paavani (Y11) | Disha (Y9) | Rahi (Spec) | Aniya (Spec) | Mr Redpath (Ref) | Ms Harris (Staff) | Ms Naqvi (Staff)

In Section 1, we had arithmetic questions for Years 9, 11 and 12, with Watford Girls being able to take majority of the points and the Year 13 question on geometry being well answered by both schools. The second set of questions were rather tricky with neither players from Year 9, 11 or 12 earning points from both schools, with topics of algebra, arithmetic and bearings, but we saw Aaryan perform exceptionally well with a question on trig identities completing it, very, very fast.

In Section 2 (geometry pairs), the first question was really tough with nobody from either school earning any points but the second question saw a Watford Boys domination as we answered both questions correctly on shapes and graph sketches.

In Section 3 we gave up the advantage for individual arithmetic / probability calculations, again with both schools unable to answer questions on algebra, inequality, or surds but we did see Ria with a rapid fast answer, leaving Aaryan in the dust on a decimals question! In the second question, we saw Babita winning the Y12 surds and decimals question but Ray winning his question on arithmetic alongside Aaryan winning his question on powers using a sneaky trick that Jakub will teach soon.

Section 4 was the team round on arithmetic sums with an awfully tricky question seeing Watford Girls beat us one more time, within the five minutes given. We saw pretty quickly that Ria, Babita, Paavani and Disha had great team chemistry, being able to split the question well between themselves and finding an efficient way to locate all twenty six answers; something for us to improve on.

Section 5 we had some calculator questions on algebraic functions and coordinates seeing another close match up where we managed to pull forward into the lead with all Watford Boys getting each of their individual answers correct, pulling us level with Watford Girls.

Section 6 is where we had the advantage with Aaryan, Rahul and Ray earning many points, helping us pull ahead of Watford Girls, who were not able to answer any of their questions, now giving us a lucky lead by two points.

Section 7 - The Race. This is by far, the most tense and tricky round in which we conceded all points, losing our amazing lead and teaching us that we need to focus on time management better, as pointed out by Mrs Groves. The score is now 34 - 38 in favour of Watford Girls, with Paavni having just performed extremely well, boosting their standings. The second question decided it all. Neither Year 9 student were able to answer their question in time, keeping the score stable. We moved on to the Year 11 question where Ray pulled through, beating Watford Girls, upping the score to 36 - 38. Year 12 saw another close rivalry with Rahul and Babita both getting their answers just after the time ran out. It was all up to Aaryan now. We all watched tensely as the pressure was on. Scribbling, scrawling with hands going up and back down, we saw Ria and Aryaan fight it out till the last few milliseconds, and in just the nick of time, Aaryan managed to submit his answer, which was deemed correct by Mr Redpath.

This brought the final score to 38 - 38, a tie. The scoring was checked over by Mrs Groves and her counterpart Ms Harris, as the players shook hands and enjoyed some snacks kindly provided. It was safe to say, there were a few silly mistakes made but also was a great learning experience for the first game and helped us know where our weaknesses are. It was an easy decision to award Ria with the title of most valuable player, earning the most individual points out of both schools and constantly impressing all of us. We will take a look at some of the tips and tricks used in today's topics in Maths Club next week, and we hope to see you all in M4 on Monday at 13:20.
