The Senior Orchestra and Joint Schools’ Orchestra provide skilled players with the opportunity for performance of demanding works. These have included symphonies by Schumann, Beethoven and Dvorak, together with concertos and other works for soloists and orchestra by Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Elgar, Weber, Grieg and Brahms. Last year the Senior Orchestra performed a selection from Jurassic Park and Lord of the Rings and this year, we have been working on two blockbuster pieces, Phantom of the Opera and Pirates of the Caribbean. In May last year the Joint Orchestra performed Sir Malcolm Arnold’s Little Suite No. 1.

Senior Strings exists to enable skilled string players from the Senior Orchestra to perform a wide range of music. We are currently working on Corelli’s Christmas Concerto.
Senior Strings in Rehearsal
The Intermediate String Orchestra, known as Crescendo Strings, exists to introduce less experienced string players to the disciplines - and, we hope, the pleasures - of playing, as well as to prepare them for the musical challenges of our Senior Strings and Senior Orchestra. We are working on the theme tune to Downton Abbey.

The Big Band enables our advanced saxes, trumpets and trombones to perform a wide repertoire of standard Big Band charts such as those by Basie and Ellington, along with more contemporary repertoire. The Band has played at the Rickmansworth Canal Festival to great acclaim. We are currently working on some vocal charts including Sunnyside of the Street, and Cry me a River, as well as purely instrumental ones such as All of Me, Chameleon and the Girl from Ipanema.

The Senior Choir draws its membership from the whole school, and sometimes from staff and parents, and performs regularly at Concerts and each year at the Carol Service and Founder’s Day. It also provides an opportunity for the rehearsal and performance of major choral works from time to time. This term we have been working on Skyfall and Hey Jude

Smaller Groups: the Brass Ensembles, String Quartets, Cello Ensemble and Jazz Group meet each week, and there are other chamber groups, rock and jazz ensembles, which rehearse regularly, so there need never be a lack of opportunity.

Annual Music Competition
This normally takes place at the beginning of the Summer Term and allows a large number of players to perform to an audience, both as soloists and in small groups. A visiting adjudicator comments on all performances, a prize is awarded to the winner of each group and a trophy to the most outstanding. Shortly afterwards some of these prize-winners perform to a larger audience at our Summer Concert.
